Smart Start is Rise & Shine’s dedicated STEM learning element within the Shine Advantage™ curriculum, a purposefully designed program and environment that brings science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to the children in an age appropriate way to encourage curiosity, creativity, and 21st-century learning.
Every Rise & Shine centre features a dedicated Smart Start Room (in centre STEM Room), a modern, flexible learning environment purpose-built around how young children actually learn best.
Inspired by the Australian Government’s vision for the classrooms of the future, our Smart Start Rooms are collaborative, dynamic spaces where children can explore ideas together, work independently, and engage deeply with our curriculum. The design itself is part of Smart Start learning.
At the heart of Smart Start education is interactivity.
Our rooms feature interactive LED boards, the same technology found in leading primary schools across Australia. Our educators use it to deliver rich, hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination and build the kind of higher-order thinking skills.
With Smart Start, you get flexible, collaborative learning spaces that allow children to work in groups, independently, and with educators, mirroring the variety of learning contexts they’ll encounter at school. The design itself teaches adaptability.
Smart Start learning incorporates ABC Reading Eggs® and ABC Mathseeds®, award-winning, Australian-made online programs developed by experienced primary school teachers.
These programs weave phonics, early reading, and numeracy into engaging, game-based experiences that children love to come back to. They complement our educators’ teaching and give every child a personalised pathway through early literacy and maths, at exactly the right pace for them.

The EYLF is the Australian Government's national framework for early childhood education. It sets out five learning outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and guides how educators plan, observe, and document children's development. Smart Start learning is designed in alignment with the EYLF, ensuring Rise & Shine's program goes above and beyond the national best-practice standards.
Smart Start for preschool and kindergarten children covers early literacy, numeracy, STEM problem-solving, and digital fluency, all delivered through hands-on, age-appropriate experiences. It incorporates award-winning programs like ABC Reading Eggs® and ABC Mathseeds® alongside our interactive LED board technology and flexible collaborative spaces designed around how children learn best.
Smart Start preschool goes beyond a traditional preschool experience.
Children learn in a purpose-built Smart Start Room (in centre STEM room) designed to mirror the modern classrooms of the future, with technology, flexible spaces, and a rich curriculum that builds higher-order thinking, digital confidence, and a genuine love of learning from an early age.
While Smart Start has a dedicated preschool and kindergarten focus that enhances Rise & Shine’s Transition to School program, the curiosity and love of learning it nurtures begins from the moment your child joins Rise & Shine. Our Smart Start program is part of the broader Shine Advantage™ curriculum, which supports children's growth and development across every room, from nursery right through to kindergarten.
