You might have seen the “3 Day Guarantee” mentioned on a government website or heard it from another parent at pickup and thought: what does that mean for us?
The good news is that it’s already in effect, it helps thousands of families, and you barely need to lift a finger to access it. Here’s everything you need to know about the 3-day guarantee childcare changes.
A Bit of Background: How the Old System Worked
To understand why the 3 Day Childcare Guarantee is such a big deal, it helps to know what came before it.
Under the old Child Care Subsidy rules, the number of subsidised hours your family could access each fortnight was directly tied to your activity level, meaning how many hours you worked, studied, volunteered, or engaged in other recognised activities. The more you did, the more subsidised hours you got.
On paper, that sounds fair. In practice, it created a real problem.
Families with low or no work and study hours were often limited to just 24 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, around one day a week. Some received even less. And because childcare costs without subsidies are high, many of these families simply couldn’t afford to send their children more often.
The children most affected were often from low-income households or single-parent families, or lived in homes where a parent was a full-time carer.These are also the children who tend to get the most out of regular, high-quality early learning. The 3 Day Guarantee was introduced to close that gap.
So What Is the 3 Day Childcare Guarantee?
From 5 January 2026, every Child Care Subsidy-eligible family is guaranteed a minimum of 72 hours of subsidised child care per fortnight (three days a week) no matter how much or how little work or study they do.
That’s the core of it. The activity test hasn’t been scrapped entirely, but its impact is now only felt by families trying to access more than three days. For the first three days of care each week, everyone eligible passes automatically.
How the Child Care Subsidy 72 Hour Rule Works in Practice
Here’s what the change looks like depending on where your family sits.
If you were previously getting fewer than 72 subsidised hours per fortnight, you’ve been automatically bumped up. You don’t need to apply, fill out any paperwork, or call Centrelink. Services Australia updated all accounts when the change came into effect on 5 January 2026.
If you were already receiving 72 or 100 hours, nothing changes for you. The guarantee raises the floor for families who have less; it doesn’t reduce entitlements for anyone already above it.
If your family needs more than three days of subsidised care, the activity test still applies for the 4th and 5th days. To access up to 100 hours per fortnight, at least one parent needs to complete more than 48 hours of recognised activity each fortnight. Recognised activities include paid work, study, training and volunteering, along with some other approved circumstances.
Families caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children automatically receive 100 subsidised hours per fortnight for each First Nations child in their care, regardless of activity level.
Who Does This Change Help the Most?
The biggest change is felt by families who previously had limited or no subsidised care. A stay-at-home parent who used to access 24 hours of subsidised child care per fortnight now gets 72. That’s the difference between one day a week and three, and for many families, it’s the difference between their child attending early learning consistently or barely at all.
More consistent attendance also builds stronger routines, gives kids more chances to connect with their peers and sets them up better for the school years ahead. For children in the preschool and kindergarten years especially, those three days make a real difference to their development.
Single-parent households, families between jobs, those studying part-time, and carers who couldn’t previously meet the activity test thresholds are all likely to see meaningful savings.
What the 3 Day Guarantee Childcare Rules Don’t Change
Your CCS percentage is still determined by your family income. The 3 Day Guarantee changes your subsidised hours only, not the rate at which the government subsidises your fees. Families earning above $538,520 remain ineligible for CCS regardless of this change.
The guarantee only covers your subsidy entitlement; it doesn’t guarantee you a physical spot at a childcare centre. You still need to be enrolled at an approved service, and you still pay the gap between the subsidised amount and your centre’s fees. With more families now entitled to more days, demand for places has increased, so if you’re planning to add days, it’s worth reaching out to centres sooner rather than later.
NSW and QLD Families: There’s More Available
The 3 Day Guarantee applies nationally, but state-based supports can stack on top to reduce costs further.
If you’re in New South Wales, free childcare NSW may be available alongside your CCS entitlements. Queensland families with a child turning 4 this year should also look into Free Kindy Queensland, which offers up to 600 funded hours per year, applied directly to your fees on top of whatever CCS your family receives. The two programs work together, and at quality centres, the combination can make a significant difference to what you actually pay each week. In addition, if you have more than one child in care, you will receive a higher rate of CCS for your second child.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
For most families, no action is required. If you were already receiving CCS, your hours were updated automatically when the change came into effect.
If you haven’t claimed CCS before but think your family might now be eligible (particularly if you previously fell short of the activity test), it’s worth lodging a claim through myGov or the Centrelink app. The process is straightforward, and with the new guaranteed 72 hours, more families qualify for support.
Log in to myGov and make sure your income estimate is up to date. An outdated estimate can mean your subsidy rate is calculated incorrectly, which gets reconciled at the end of the financial year, sometimes resulting in a debt.
